Wyeth Pharmaceutics

A campus was purchased from another organization to be the worldwide headquarters for Wyeth Pharmaceutics. It was originally constructed in the 1980s and encompassed 8 buildings with an interconnecting spline and atrium totaling approximately 1.3 million square feet. A campus master plan was developed which would increase the total facility size to 4.9 million square feet. The existing communication services were routed in the path of the planned construction and the existing buildings had an obsolete cabling infrastructure, which could not support the GigaBit Ethernet utilized by Wyeth.  Minimal renovations were required outside of the communications systems so the spaces were to be occupied within 6 months of the purchase completion.

 A communications master plan was developed that upgraded the existing buildings while providing a path for the future expansion. New duct banks were installed to move all communication services away from future excavation areas.  The existing telecommunication spaces were not adequate for the new systems so new Telecommunications Rooms were constructed. The existing communications cabling was removed so that the infrastructure could be reused. The existing copper backbone was extended to new frames and reused to the maximum extent. The fiber optic backbone was removed and replaced with new enhanced multimode and singlemode fiber optic cable. Category 6 was utilized as the horizontal cable.

The project was elevated to a fast track to meet the planned occupancy timeframes. The winning bidder responded with multiple project managers and over 50 installation technicians.  The existing construction presented many installation challenges with insufficient conduit infrastructure, multiple atriums, multiple ceiling types (drywall, fabric, spline tile and dropped) and wall finishes (brick, fabric, GWB and masonry). Field decisions occurred daily as the building as-built information did not reflect the actual construction. Quick responses maintained the schedules and the campus occupancy occurred on schedule.

Upon completion of the Phase1, design progressed to the new Phase 2 construction which would add 725,000 square feet to the existing structure with five new buildings for Executive areas, multimedia studios and administrative support. Additionally construction started on Phase 3 which added 325,000 square feet on a separate property close to the campus for Training. The campus duct bank was extended to both new phases which incorporated three additional Equipment Rooms and 32 additional Telecommunications Rooms.

The project was completed on-time and within budget. Over 250,000 miles of horizontal Category 6 cable was installed by multiple contractors with supporting cable tray and conduit. Fiber optic and copper backbone cables, patch panels, racks and protectors were installed to ensure that this would be a standard’s compliant installation that would support the current and future needs of the client.

The construction costs for communications infrastructure for the three phases exceeded $6 Million. The project began in October 2000 and was completed in July 2003.
